MEET CHRISTINE BOEMIG!

Christine finds her work as a DSP very rewarding.

Christine Boemig wanted a career path that would be more personally fulfilling to her than the one she was on a little more than three years ago when she applied for a position with Lakes Region Community Services. During her college years Christine spent time teaching people with disabilities how to swim. But her recent experience had been working as a manager, both in retail and banking. Christine finds her current job with LRCS much more rewarding. “I look forward to spending time with the people I support every day and they appreciate the time we spend together as much as I do,” she said. “I love my job.” It’s not just the nature of the work that has enhanced Christine’s quality of life. She cites her health plan and work schedule (Christine works from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.) as benefits of the job that make her life run more smoothly. Christine thinks it’s important for a direct support professional to be patient, kind, empathetic and to treat others as they would want to be treated. She has many hobbies and talents that she brings to the table and can share with the individuals she supports including crafting, painting, skiing and cooking. “I always strive to make the time I spend with the individuals I support full of learning and fun experiences,” said Christine. “I’ve learned to never, ever give up, to always strive to be my best and help the people I support do the same.”

MEET JANE COTE!

Program Manager Jane Cote joined Lakes Region Community Services 20 years ago as a Direct Support Professional. A few days after graduating from NH Technical College of Berlin, she attended an LRCS job fair with her mom.

“My mother was a big influence on my career in many ways. She worked as a caregiver in a residential home. I had the opportunity to meet some residents as a young child.” Jane says she has experienced a lot of personal growth over the years she has supported people with disabilities. “I can honestly say I have learned more from the people we support than I have taught them. I have never met people more dependable or thrilled to be given a volunteer or employment opportunity. It’s very rewarding to give someone a chance to try something they’ve never done before – whether it’s writing their own invitations to their birthday party, attending camp for the first time or getting their first job.” Her job at LRCS was even the catalyst for her to become interested in scrapbooking, which is now a huge part of her life. “I’m an avid scrapbooker. I attend two conventions a year and run a monthly scrapbooking group in Franklin. The truth is I wouldn’t be a scrapbooker if I hadn’t been introduced to it several years ago by a woman we support in our Residential department.” There are a few qualities that Jane thinks are necessary to being a successful Direct Support Professional. “I feel that being a good listener is the most important thing. The people we serve sometimes communicate in non-traditional ways, so it’s important to be in tune. Flexibility and confidence are also important.”

Lakes Region Community Services employs more than 175 Direct Support Professionals who help individuals with developmental disabilities and brain injuries who live, work and thrive in their community.
